The purpose of the Hillsdalian is to provide coverage of Hillsdale County news, cultural and political. In addition to the free “Week Ahead” feature—which will provide an inclusive calendar of public events that are scheduled for the upcoming week, from politics to performances to sports—the Hillsdalian staff will publish editorials, columns, and breaking news coverage for a minimal monthly cost.
Corporate media outlets, in most cases supported by Gannett Media, do not provide adequate local coverage—despite their local names—and too often leave residents blind to what their representatives are doing and saying in the political bodies closest to them. Instead, they publish irrelevant stories, corporate advertisements, and celebrity gossip articles. The Hillsdalian aims to fill the gap in local news coverage by telling the story of Hillsdale County and its people.
The Week Ahead, a Sunday publication, is meant to provide a one-stop place at which major events can be seen. We hope it will function as an easy-to-navigate county-wide social calendar.
The news coverage, editorials, and columns will serve different purposes. The Hillsdalian staff intends to provide timely coverage of stories as they break. These articles will often include comments from the Hillsdalian’s interviews with relevant public officials and private citizens.
The editorials and columns will feature a more detailed analysis of the issues that the county and its various municipalities face, ranging from problems caused by state policies, such as green energy mandates or early voting periods, to more nearby difficulties, such as tight budgets, high property taxes, and growing municipal bureaucracies. We aim to help residents get a clearer picture of this fluctuating political landscape.
