The 'City Bakery' Building Could Get a Fresh Facade, Ethan's Donuts a New Patio
The TIFA Program Review Committee recommended grants for Ethan's Donuts & the 'City Bakery' Building
Downtown Hillsdale—The Program Review Committee recommended on Wednesday that the Tax Increment Finance Authority approve grants for Ethan’s Donut Factory and 70-72 N. Howell St, the “City Bakery” building.
The full TIFA board will vote on the grant requests at its next meeting on Tuesday, July 15th at 7:30 a.m.
Ethan’s Donut Factory requested a $4,550 grant from the TIFA committee to build a patio on the building’s south side, off McCollum Street. The grant would cover 50% of the project’s total estimated cost of $9,100.
Two committee members—Mike Clark and Cindy Bieszk—voted to send the grant to the full TIFA board for approval. Darin Spieth, who sits on the committee and co-owns Ethan’s Donut Factory, abstained from the vote, according to the meeting minutes.
The owner of 70-72 N. Howell St., Sarah Maier, applied for a grant to repair the building’s facade, which features the words “City Bakery” on a brick and metal facade.
The estimated cost of the project is $42,000, but the TIFA grant is capped at $10,000.
The committee voted 3-0 to recommend the $10,000 grant to the TIFA board.
“We are just excited that our application will go in front of the full board next month,” Maier told the Hillsdalian. “Our fingers are crossed, and we will patiently be waiting.”
There’s ongoing work on the building’s interior. The building has sat empty for years since SCP Corporate, a printing company, moved out.
An addition to the back of the building, which had deteriorated and become hazardous, has been torn down.
